About the role

The Government of Tristan da Cunha (TdC) is seeking to fill the role of General Practitioner on its Medical Officer Rota during 2025.  This is a unique opportunity to lead and support on strategic health care provision on the island.

The successful candidate will be a fully qualified general practitioner with a strong background in Anaesthetics.  S/He will have a broad skills mix and proven experience in General Medicine and Obstetrics; fully registered with the UK General Council (GMC) or similar recognised Medical or relevant Board; with a minimum of 10 years’ post qualification experience as a general practitioner.  The candidate will also provide health promotion/preventive and curative clinical care to the Island population.

About Camogli Healthcare Centre

The Tristan da Cunha Camogli Healthcare Centre, usually referred to as the hospital, was built and equipped in 2016/2017 to the latest UK National Health Service standards and was officially opened on 7th June 2017. It is located in the south western corner of the settlement below the previous hospital (built in 1971), which is now used by the veterinarians and for general storage. The new hospital was funded by the then UK Department for International Development (DfID) with the intention that the improved facilities would allow more procedures to be performed locally by visiting specialists, and therefore reduce the need for expensive referrals to Cape Town.

Key Responsibilities

You will be expected:

• To take responsibility for all medical and health matters for the inhabitants of Tristan da Cunha, in accordance with the TDC Medical Department Policy
• To perform all the duties of a General Practitioner with anaesthetic, obstetric and public health duties when the situation arises
• To support and maintain the distant (telehealth) support links in place in relevant areas and explore establishment of further links where warranted
• To take responsibility for public health matters with a view to improving the health status of the Island population, including devising and delivery of effective strategies to counter the community’s lifestyle issues and challenges and proactively implementing recommendations received from visiting specialists in the field of public and environmental health
• To liaise effectively with visiting yachts and ships so that all appropriate measures are taken to ensure the health of the community is protected, as far as is practically possible, from ship borne diseases and viruses
• To give his/her opinion regarding the Strategic Development Plan (SDP) if requested by the Head of Department
• To review the island’s health policy and medical operational plan as requested by the Head of Department
• To develop and ensure effective implementation of appropriate workplace policies and procedures and treatment guidelines/protocols taking into account international best practice
• To be part of the Health Committee with other members of the Government
• To line manage health and support staff at Camogli Healthcare Centre in accordance with Tristan Government management practice and procedures, including design and delivery of training and support for continuing professional development
• To perform basic and emergency dentistry when there is no visiting dental team on-Island
• As required, to assist the Agricultural Officer with veterinary work

Job Requirement:

Essential

1. Demonstrated 10 years post qualification experience as a General Practitioner in the broadest aspect.
2. Anaesthetics experience, hence a Diploma in Anaesthesia will be beneficial
3. Full membership with the General Medical Council (GMC) or similar Medical Board recognised by the UK as medical doctor with a speciality in General Practice and Anaesthetics
4. Primary Health Care: confident in managing the usual conditions encountered in a busy General Practice.
5. MB or BM/BAO/FRCGP/FRCA/OB&GYN
6. ACLS, PALS (APLS) and ATLS

Desirable:

1. Experience in Obstetrics and the ability to manage deliveries (normal and caesarean) would be beneficial including a Diploma in Obstetrics.
2. Experience in Gynaecology
3. Basic Dental experience (eg: local anaesthesia and tooth extraction)
4. Experience in Public Health and/or Health Services Managemen
5. A very good knowledge and management of Hypertension as well as Diabetes.
6. Ability to manage and motivate staff.
7. Experience of working in overseas territories would be an advantage.

About the role

We are looking for a suitably experienced hands-on working farmer who will head up the busy Agriculture Department on Tristan da Cunha.  The postholder will work closely with all the staff in the Department to ensure good leadership and will assist the Government of Tristan da Cunha (GoTdC) in its strategic and business planning and prioritising.

Key Responsibilities

You will be expected to

• offer training where needed, such as improvements in grazing, managing livestock and horticulture
• general animal welfare of the stock including good housekeeping practice, inspections and observing of health issues
• some Veterinary experience on Cattle and Sheep
• advise on and introduce new ideas for improving growing more vegetables with knowledge/experience of Hydroponics
• maintain fencing
• deal with the Island Community
• set out new ideas to improve a Strategy for the Island’s future
• deal with orders for bringing supplies
• adhere to all site Health & Safety, environmental and technical policies and procedures
• maintain accurate Records of all appropriate information
• be flexible and help with any other general farm duties that may arise

Job Requirement:

• Understanding of animal welfare and hygiene practices
• Positive can-do attitude is essential along with the ability to work to a high standard without supervision
• Caring, passionate, driven, enthusiastic, competent individual with excellent eye for detail.

About the role

We’re looking for a CIMA/CCAB-qualified finance professional to lead the overall financial management of the Ascension Island Government (AIG). As the financial lead for the government of a UK Overseas Territory this position requires a background in public finance, while the broad generalist content also means that experience relevant to all areas of the job description is desirable.

What you’ll do

As part of AIG’s Senior Management Team (SMT), you’ll be responsible for a range of strategic and operational services provided by the island’s government. You’ll be responsible for the delivery of overall effective financial management of the AIG and the efficient use of resources to support the delivery of the Public Service. Through the provision of strategic financial and operations advice, you’ll support the AIG’s Directorates to achieve their objectives. As a member of the Ascension Island Council and Chair of its Finance Committee, you’ll be responsible for the discharge of statutory duties defined in the island’s Constitution.

What you’ll bring

As a CIMA/CCAB qualified practitioner, ideally with several years’ experience in a senior public sector finance role, you’ll be someone who is knowledgeable, adaptable and resilient with a high level of personal integrity. You’ll bring leadership skills and experience of managing the competing demands of multi-disciplinary teams, the ability to prioritise effectively and you will be responsible for delivering to deadlines on key and complex resourcing challenges.
